Political/urban sociologist Jeroen van der Waal (Sliedrecht, 1974) is assistant professor (non-tenured) at Erasmus University Rotterdam and a member of the Centre for Rotterdam Cultural Sociology (CROCUS). His research interests are twofold. On the one hand he studies the impact of economic globalization and post-industrialization on social inequality and ethnic relations in cities in the advanced economies. Together with Jack Burgers he has written articles on these topics that are published in journals as Urban Studies and Sociologie.

On the other hand, he is engaged in research on the impact of cultural change on value orientations and voting

behaviour in the west. In collaboration with Peter Achterberg, Dick Houtman and Willem de Koster he has published on those issues in journals as the British Journal of Criminology, International Political Science Review, Journal for the Scientific Study of Religion, Journal of European Social Policy, Politics & Society, Res Publica, Sociologie and Urban Affairs Review.

Currently, he is involved in the project Ethnic Contact or Conflict in Contemporary Dutch Cities? The Impact of

Urban Culture on Ethnocentrism and Right-Wing Populist Voting, which has been funded by the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO) in the Conflict and Security Theme.
